THE ADMIRAL HOTEL

admiral-1.jpg The Christian Admiral Hotel (aka The Hotel Cape May) built between 1906 and 1908 was a landmark building in Cape May, New Jersey. During the two World Wars the hotel was used as a military hospital. In 1961 it was purchased by Reverence Carl McIntire for the Christian Beacon Press, and it operated as a bible conference hotel until it closed in 1991.

In 1993 and 1994, while teaching at the Cape May Photo Workshops, I obtained permission to photograph the closed building. Although there were only a few sessions at the hotel,  I made some interesting photographs using Fuji Reala film in a Hasselblad. The light was beautiful, the tall ceilings amazing. The hotel, a huge Beaux-Arts style building, like many pieces of architectural and cultural history was demolished 2/26/1996. These images are from the June 1994 visit.
